To be able to generate a creation, sometimes you have to look at whats existing to get a general feel of what to do. By looking at the Massing & Parti of existing observatories and science centers, I can analyze the circulation and overall shape of what these buildings try to convey. I then can determine what's useful or not in the process of creating my own. These are the same 10 buildings that are in the last post.
Arizona Science Center
Connecticut Science Center
Detroit Science Center
Liberty Science Center
Kitt Peak National Observatory
Griffith Observatory
NY Hall of Science
Murturm Nature Observation Tower
Steward Observatory
Yerkes Observatory
I like the outlines you've provided on the existing buildings for comparative massing studies. This makes for a great presentation tool. Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Breaking down the components of the buildings helped by see the overall shape.
DeleteThere is a great illustrative quality to your diagrams. I appreciate the simplicity of the approach. That said, a legend or cipher would definitely shed some light on what the outlines represent. I am going to take a leap and approach the delineations as programmatic volumes. Do not limit your thinking solely to one solitary aspect of partie/massing. Study volume, programme, planometric and sectional maneuvers, spatial quality...etc. as a holistic approach.
ReplyDeleteYeah the lines represent just the overall volume of the building. The colors are just to separate the parts. Other analysis boards will be arriving soon enough.
DeleteI agree with Andy, maybe you can use the same simple lines to identify different aspects of buildings and look at them as layers, maybe you can better understand the whole process of the building.
ReplyDeleteI've recently posted some boards addressing the Hierarchy. Hopefully, that'll illustrate the layers of importance.
DeleteI really enjoy these diagrams. What I would like to see more of is the your idea of the parti. Try to create a simple image now that you have looked at the massing and understand the buildings.

ReplyDelete"The diagrams are simple, yet powerful in communicating the relationship between 2D and 3D. Good approach. The study can be extended further on how the landscape and building program influenced in creating these forms.
For some reason I couldn't post my comments on the blog. I will try again. Meanwhile the above can be communicated.
